Ballad by Sonia Sanchez
In this poem, I thought that the speaker was explaining how herself was too old to learn about love so there was no point in thinking about it and such like that while the person she speaks of is too young to even mention the meaning of love. There was a moment where the speaker knew what love was and what it was about and she also experienced it herself, but as she got older, she lost her skill and knowledge of it. She remembered all that went with the memory of love that she experienced. The "rain", "grass" and "stone" was like the nature of love, she had memories for each and every one of those things.

The imagery of stanza two is important, as it suggests a view of love that goes beyond what we conventionally think of as love; a wealth of experience is condensed into those images, in terms such as "exploding," "excreting," and suggestions of worn steps/stones--love is no gentle frilly thing...and also not (merely) human...see my comments on Rosemarie's and Jennifer's blogs

ReplyDeletehow is "the rain exploding in the air is love" conceit?
